Evening was quickly approaching, with the sky colored in oranges and purples that steadily darkened. Champignon would no doubt be eager to come out, so the ranger retrieved the PokéBall containing her Morelull and tossed it.

"Hello there, sleepyhead," she said with a soft, airy laugh as the burst of light faded, to an enthusiastic response. By contrast, Darjeeling was nodding off; and so she withdrew her partner for once. "Rest well, dar — Hey!"

This last was said as the Morelull was already moving away, but when he didn't turn back his Trainer had no choice but to hasten her step. What had gotten into him? He was nocturnal, sure, but this was unusual all the same.

"Lull!" The answer soon presented itself as he halted by the side of a fellow Grass-type Pokémon, whose Trainer was — what a happy coincidence! — a fellow ranger. "Lull~"

Having caught up, Blossom noticed that the woman sported no armband. Well, it could be that the stranger was a part-timer or on leave... For better or for worse, the Kalosian recalled a photograph, a rank and little else. It wasn't any of her business, in any case.

As such, Blossom smiled and said only, "Good evening. I'm sorry about him, he is not usually so excitable... Would you have me call him back?"

The worst had come to fruition, amongst everything else that Yuina was working against within the region, the last thing she'd wanted to know was that their prison wardens had resurfaced. She could still taste peach on her tongue... And the magenta haze flickered in the corners of her vision sometimes after being made to fall into those memories again at the behest of that bird.[break]
Standing amidst the outskirts of Oldale, reading some reports of sightings of the three Pokémon, Yuina stopped for a moment as she coughed, struggling to breathe, the chain around her throat again... Before Beo tapped at her to gain her attention.[break][break]
She hoped Absinthe Blackwood was pleased with the grave she had dug herself.[break][break]
"We'll keep searching, just a little while longer while there's still daylight," Yuina shuttered, drawing in an even, steady breath. She hated that bird now more than ever. And if she had anything to do about it, she would see it dead, and even time wouldn't be able to save it.[break][break]
There was a shuffle in the foliage off to the side, and Yuina bristled instantly, on edge. Beo too took to the offensive, the chains on his tail shifting, ready... But it was no enemy, at least not yet. It was a small Morelull, and a trainer quickly following behind it.[break]
Tense, Yuina breathed again.[break][break]
"Uhm, no... it's fine. Just, be careful letting it run off like that," Yuina cautioned, whether it be rockets trying to encroach from the west or any one of the abhorrent wardens that could be lurking in the trees, it wasn't a good idea to just go running off like that...

The pair seemed tense for some reason; though, now that Blossom thought of it, there wasn't exactly a shortage of reasons to be nervous in these times. She recalled her meeting with DESIREE BLOOMS as well, how she hadn't been anxious then either until she saw that the woman was. She had to wonder if she was too carefree to be in this line of work.

Even if so, uplifting morale was as much part of her job as ensuring the safety of civilians. Although, she might seem presumptuous if she inquired after a stranger's troubles, not to mention that the lady was an elite ranger while she was a cadet. For the time being, she took the slight admonishment with bashful grace.

"Ah, yes, I will be more careful," she said, electing not to mention the fact that she had not let Champignon run off. That could stay between them, so she only gave him a side eye. "Thank you for your understanding, madame."

Her gaze returned to the two Pokémon soon after, lingering on the Breloom's extra appendage for a split second. Her Morelull was undaunted by that awful poisoned chain, his calls softer now as he tried to befriend the other. For her part, Blossom looked back to its Trainer quickly enough, her smile unfaltering despite the horror of realization.

"I'm Blossom Delier," she went on as though nothing were amiss, holding out a hand. "Pleased to meet you."

Straightening out for a moment, letting out some of the tension in her shoulders, Yuina looked to the younger woman as she accepted the small slight against being careful in their surroundings. Her eyes flicked briefly to the screen, a tablet of sorts she held in her hands, vigilant, expecting, but nothing came of it. She'd been trying to follow infinity energy signatures for hours now, her readings hadn't changed much if at all...[break][break]
"You're welcome...," Yuina offered, though it intoned a bit more of a question. She hadn't done anything to be thanked for, and 'madame' was a bit much... She could expect as much from Officer Gwyar Wledig, but to each their own she supposed. It wasn't as if she knew this young woman.[break][break]
The Breloom stood beside her leered for only a moment more before shifting around in the grasses again, sniffing the air. The chains linked at his tail held still now that they weren't immediately threatened, but only just. Anything could happen.[break]
Beo glanced down to the small mushroom, with little concern or regard, it wasn't why they were out there and he was still intent on searching for their chosen enemy while they were.[break][break]
Checking her equipment again, Yuina's eyes glanced to the hand held out, another formality. She shifted the weight of her screen in one hand as she reached out to at least reciprocate the gesture.[break]
"I'm Yuina, nice to meet you too."

Her new acquaintance wasn't very sociable, but Blossom didn't mind; even less so when something clearly had her on edge. With the formalities out of the way, there was little to do save for offering to help her, presumption or no.

Champignon seemed to think much the same, as — having noticed the Breloom's lack of interest in bonding — he promptly used Illuminate to cast a light; but, while she appreciated his intent, Blossom wasn't sure that it was a good idea.

"Éteindre la lumière, mon chouchou," she murmured, briefly forgetting that they had company, and he did so — albeit with a small, confused cry. "We do not know whether they wish to attract... whatever is out here," she added, in Common for Yuina's benefit.

It would be quite something if she, too, turned out to be Kalosian like Desiree had before her. The chances of that were slim, though, and anyway it didn't matter insofar as offering help went. As such, Blossom cleared her throat.

"May I ask what it is that is lurking out here?" She inquired, although without a polite address since the other woman had been informal. "I should like to help you if I am able, and to protect Oldale as well."

Yuina bit her tongue as all of a sudden, unprompted, and with little regard to anything, the small mushroom decided to light up their immediate surroundings. Yuina glanced around quickly, fortunate always to have more than one set of eyes watching things with her, but Beo swatted the ground beside the Morelull indignantly with his tail. What was it trying to do?[break][break]
"No, we don't. Not without being able to find them first," Yuina returned, short, tempered, she was not in a space that made it easy for her to connect with others and it was showing in earnest. How she hated to be perceived.[break][break]
"If its not rockets trying to come in from Petalburg, it could be the Pokémon responsible for this," Yuina answered, pointing to the linked, magenta chains that hung from the Breloom's body.[break]
"Either way, if you're not careful, getting hurt would be the least of your concerns," she warned, serious. She wasn't trying to scare the young woman, far from it, but there was no where truly safe in the entirety of Hoenn. If she was going to go out looking for ways to help Oldale, she needed to know how much of a threat she could really face.

Well, clearly it had been presumptuous of her to even offer assistance. In hindsight, the woman's demeanor should have told her as much, but at least Yuina didn't seem offended. She was certain that it wasn't personal, but only the stress...

For his part, Champignon flinched visibly at the other Trainer's harsh tone and the thump of her Breloom's tail against the ground. He had thought that it would be useful to have more light as their surroundings darkened and that it would save time if their enemies came to them; but all his attempt to help had done was make his lack of experience obvious. With an apologetic call, so quiet that it was nearly inaudible, he returned to his Trainer's side at last.

Meanwhile, Blossom found that it was growing harder to justify any attempt to help. Not even because her feelings were hurt, as — she told herself — this wasn't personal; but because the woman had already concluded that she wouldn't be much help. For all that Champignon was often hasty, for all that she herself couldn't have known in advance what the other was looking for, she was still a cadet. She was far from completely ignorant, and as a matter of fact they were close enough to Oldale that she doubted any Rocket agents would make it here. Yet arguing with Yuina wouldn't help, and she didn't have any reason to either. It wasn't like she felt patronized.

She really didn't, she told herself even as she took a shaky breath, even as the Morelull hid behind her leg. She couldn't be this sensitive if she was to carry out her duties effectively. She couldn't be this carefree, either.

"You're right, of course you are," Blossom murmured, not meeting the woman's eye. "I'm sorry again, madame, for him and for my own ineptitude as a trainer."

[break][break]

She could practically feel the little mushroom's surprise at that, but he kept quiet. She, too, ought to keep quiet and take her leave; and yet her compassionate nature prevented it.

"If I may ask one last question... What Pokémon did this to your Breloom?"

Well, she'd done a wonderful job in rapport it seemed. Yuina held a sigh as Blossom and the Morelull backed off, it was just a bad go of things all around.[break]
"Look," she breathed, she lacked empathy, and so many other things right now, but she had to save face if she could. She couldn't very well be a part of the problem any more than she already was.[break][break]
"I get it, you want to help, and everyone has to start somewhere. That's not a mark against your aptitude," Yuina spoke first, stern still, but trying.[break]
"But whatever help you're trying to offer, I'd be doing you a disservice by not being upfront about the things that are out there," she offered then, a serious note. If she sugar coated anything, or lied and said that there was nothing lurking or dangerous, and then something happened to her? That would be on her. Hard truths were hard truths. Blossom could very well be killed by someone not telling her what she could come up against.[break][break]
"Things like the Toxic Chain, and three terrible Pokémon that are corrupted by it, and will spread it. They will poison you and render your Pokémon under their control, and all three of them were seen in Petalburg and have been moving around," she answered, again, harsh but honest.

She really should have just excused herself and gone on her way, Blossom thought as the other woman went on. There was an attempt at reassurance made at first, yes, which she would have been content with if not for the rest. But then, maybe that tone was warranted. Maybe she really was too soft and too carefree for this line of work, even though she hadn't done anything wrong here. That had all been her well-intentioned but hasty little mushroom, and she was taking the brunt of it. Yet she couldn't quite bring herself to hold it against Champignon, and to be honest she didn't feel comfortable scolding him in front of Yuina after everything.

Or rather, she didn't feel like scolding him at all. One lecture was enough for the evening.

"Actually," she began, still soft but with a steely undertone that hadn't been there before, "it is a mark against my aptitude. If you are going to say otherwise, madame, I will thank you not to speak down to me because of my Pokémon's actions."

She paused, licking her lips.

"I may have much left to learn and be woefully inexperienced in comparison to you, but I am a ranger still."

It was to her credit that she didn't remark upon Yuina's missing armband, instead taking another breath before she bent to gather Champignon into her arms. He settled against her obediently and she rose again, feeling better now that she'd at least tried to defend herself. As much as Blossom avoided conflict, she had to be brave enough to do at least this much. She would encounter worse things — and worse people — out in the field.

"I'm truly sorry for the interruption, and I will endeavor to be better informed in the future. If you'll excuse me."

Pressing her Morelull close, she turned on her heel and left without waiting for a response.
